Trump Enacts 15% Tariff to Shield US Solar, Chip Industries.

President Donald Trump has mandated a 15% tariff on imports of products containing polysilicon, a vital component in semiconductor manufacturing and solar panels, effective December 4. This move is part of an effort to boost domestic production and lessen the United States’ dependence on China, the leading global producer of the material.

Polysilicon, known for its ultra-pure form of silicon, is crucial in the production of semiconductors used in artificial intelligence systems, data centers, and solar technology. The newly announced tariffs introduce minimum import prices: $21 per kilogram for polysilicon, $100 per kilogram for polysilicon ingots and wafers, $0.22 per watt for solar cells, and $0.38 per watt for solar modules and panels. These measures aim to bolster the commercial viability of domestic polysilicon production and fortify critical supply chains linked to economic and national security.

The United States currently has two major polysilicon production facilities, operated by Hemlock Semiconductor in Michigan and Wacker Chemie in Tennessee. In addition to the tariffs, the new policy allows for the establishment of incentives to encourage investments in domestic polysilicon and related manufacturing facilities. This initiative reflects a strategic push to enhance the nation’s industrial capacity in these critical sectors.

China has criticized the U.S. for the tariff, accusing it of exploiting national security concerns to impose restrictions on Chinese businesses. Chinese officials warn that such protectionist measures could potentially disrupt trade between the two countries. Despite these tensions, China’s export sector, particularly in electronics, artificial intelligence-related products, and other high-value manufacturing areas, continues to show robust growth.
