President Donald Trump has called on Americans to brace for slightly increased gasoline prices amid ongoing tensions with Iran, as disruptions persist in the critical Strait of Hormuz. Addressing supporters at a New York rally, Trump emphasized that paying “a tiny little bit more” at the pump is a necessary sacrifice to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He also floated the idea of declaring the strategic waterway a “territory of the United States” following a hypothetical defeat of Iran.
Iran has dismissed Trump’s assertions, maintaining that control over the Strait of Hormuz will remain with Tehran. Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, stated that the blockade would continue until the U.S. acknowledges what he termed as the reality of its defeat. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi indicated that Tehran has not committed to resuming talks with the U.S., insisting that shipping through the strait will only resume if Washington complies with Iran’s terms.

This has led to a spike in crude oil prices and increased pressure on gasoline costs. Currently, the average price for gasoline in the United States has climbed to approximately $4.08 per gallon, marking a 29% rise from the previous year. Similarly, Brent crude prices are poised for a notable weekly increase.
In Iran, the economic consequences are palpable, with President Masoud Pezeshkian attributing the country’s rising inflation to the U.S. blockade, sanctions, and limitations on Iranian oil exports. As diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire remain at a standstill, the Trump administration has threatened further financial actions against Tehran, intensifying the economic strain on the nation.
