This permit allows the Elon Musk-led company to operate a makeshift power plant to support its intensive AI computations. With this approval, the site can now run nearly double the number of turbines it previously utilized.
The Southaven site is part of a larger regional footprint that includes a massive facility in Memphis, Tennessee. That earlier project, known simply as Colossus, spans the size of 13 football fields and utilizes 15 of its own gas generators. The rapid deployment of these sites reflects the high-speed nature of the AI industry, where hardware capacity often outpaces utility infrastructure. xAI is also developing a third location, Macrohardrr, further cementing its presence in northern Mississippi.
